Lauri Markkanen is also making a big name for himself this season. He’s been putting up incredible numbers with Will Hardy and is looking like an incredible pickup for the Jazz. On this episode of the SLC Dunk Podcast we were joined by Anthony Irwin of Silver Screen and Roll who covers the Los Angeles Lakers.

With the rumors of a possible trade involving Russell Westbrook to the Utah Jazz, I wanted to bring Anthony on to discuss what that trade might look like from a Lakers point of view. We discussed the LeBron James recent contract extension and how that affects the Lakers’ urgency to make a trade and how the Jazz might be able to go after the Lakers’ picks in a trade. How willing are the Lakers to make a trade that includes their future picks when LeBron James is likely retired?

We discussed the different players that the Lakers might be interested in on the Jazz roster that would be a good fit for the Lakers.

What was most interesting to me after talking with Anthony was how much more it feels like a 3-team trade between the Jazz, Lakers and Knicks might be possible. Because the Jazz can’t make any trades with their new players from the Minnesota Timberwolves, (that were attained in the Rudy Gobert trade), maybe all these teams are waiting for that to happen?

We also discussed the Knicks and what players the Lakers might be interested in from them in a 3-team trade. There’s a lot of moving parts but after discussing everything, it’s clear the Lakers are motivated to get involved so they can take advantage of the last few years of LeBron James career in LA.

The Jazz looked dominant and ready to roll through the season in a big way. Donovan Mitchell had a strong second half and showed that he’s still growing as a player. In the first half he deferred to the other playmakers on the floor and it allowed Rudy Gobert and Mike Conley to do work. Speaking of Gobert, he was a monster with 21 rebounds and 16 points. Jordan Clarkson looks like he meshes well with Hassan Whiteside in that Whiteside’s style allows Clarkson to go to work in isolation. It’s something to watch but it looks like a nice fit so far.

HOOPS NERD: Utah Jazz vs Dallas Mavericks Post Game Reaction: Rudy Gobert vs Luka Doncic!

The Utah Jazz overcame the Dallas Mavericks late to get a 112 to 107 victory. Luka Doncic scored 25 points on 11/25 shooting but was only 2/10 from three. Rudy Gobert scored 22 points on 8/8 shooting with 17 rebounds and 5 blocks.

If you needed a signature performance to show why Rudy Gobert should be an all-star, it was tonight.

The Dallas Mavericks, who sport one of the best offenses in the NBA, threw everything they had at Gobert and he had and he handled all of it. Including the game winning block that finished the Mavericks.

Oh and Donovan Mitchell was just good enough on offense to help the Jazz squeak by.

Another night of disappointing offense from the Utah Jazz as they fell to the Minnesota Timberwolves 112 to 102. Utah’s offense was woeful with players not being able to make shots yet again.

Donovan Mitchell had probably his worst shooting night of the season going 5/23 from the field. The other starters had okay nights but no one was able to overcome that difficult of a night from their best offensive player.

But you can’t put all the blame on Mitchell because the Jazz have lost games in which he’s played well offensively. The offense just doesn’t seem to be getting it done for the players and the Jazz need to figure out soon what the issues are or they’ll continue to lose winnable games.

There were huge expectations of the Jazz coming into this season and they lived up to them tonight.

It’s interesting that everything has seemed like the opposite of what we expected from preseason up until now. In preseason the defense looked porous but it looks elite so far this year. The offense in preseason looked fantastic and has struggled up until tonight. Bojan Bogdanovic couldn’t shoot in preseason and now he’s the best shooter on the team.

In one of the most most anticipated preseason games I can remember, the New Orleans Pelicans edged out the Utah Jazz.

For Jazz fans it was the first meeting with Derrick Favors since the offseason. For the rest of the world it was another chance to see Zion Williamson. And Zion did not disappoint.

The touted number 1 overall pick had his way with the Jazz at the rim late in the game. Shooting 9/12 from the field and scoring 26 points, his touch at the basket is as good as any player I’ve ever seen. Rudy Gobert made his life a little more difficult, but he was even able to score over Gobert a few times.

His ability to put the ball in the hoop regardless of who was guarding him was astonishing. He also powered through any defense and would finish each with an and-1. And I’m not exaggerating. He had like 4 and-1’s and at times it felt like the best defense was to just bear hug him. Who in the league can even come close to guarding him?

The Pelicans are going to be a problem and when you look at what Zion was doing, don’t be surprised if they don’t just make the playoffs but maybe even get a decent seed.

Even with Zion doing Zion things, the Jazz looked elite offensively and spent most of the game with a comfortable lead up until the fourth quarter when they rested their starters. Donovan Mitchell and Mike Conley both put up 7 assists and Bojan Bogdanovic shot 5/8 from the field and 3/5 from three. There’s just so many weapons offensively for the Jazz and every night there’s a chance for anyone to go off.

Probably one of the most anticipated things was seeing who Quin Snyder would start at the power forward and it was Royce O’Neale. How did it go? O’Neale looked like an elite shooting four going 6/8 from the field and 4/6 from three. O’Neale is such a versatile wing defender and is now shooting the ball with confidence. In a lot of ways, getting O’Neale at the 4-spot is like adding another player because it allows you to play him like you couldn’t in the past. Get ready for a big Royce O’Neale season.

HOOPS NERD - Donovan Mitchell and Team USA take care of Giannis and Greece

Behind leading scorers Kemba Walker and Donovan Mitchell, team USA handled Greece with ease.

Giannis Antetokounmpo came out with a flurry of 7 points that included a pull-up three. He was matched by Donovan Mitchell who scored the first 5 points for Team USA. But Team USA was able to cool off Giannis who ended the game with only 15 points.

Whenever Antetokounmpo tried to get to the rim, team USA did a solid job of walling off the paint to keep Giannis away. Giannis would then pass off to shooters but Greece shot a dreadful 26% as a team from three and it was one of the major reasons Team USA was able to get the 16-point, 69-53 win.

It’s finally September and it feels like the offseason has lasted for months. Luckily for NBA fans they’ve been blessed with Team USA Basketball. The surprise leader of the team? Donovan Mitchell.

How long ago was it that people were wondering whether Mitchell would make the team? Now it feels like if the United States want gold it will be because Donovan Mitchell led them there.

On this episode of the SLC Punks Podcast we discuss Donovan Mitchell’s rise and his vital role for Team USA.

Risky offseason trade options for the Utah Jazz that could really pay off
